Dodgers Game!

(It was Joe Torre Bobble head Night. I haven't figured out yet what we're going to do with two of these little guys)

It's that time of year again, baseball season. We went to our first Dodger game of the season on Friday. Robert loves going to Dodgers games, and I..., well, I love being with Robert. Seriously, the games are fun for me, but I tend to spend more time watching the other people than watching the game (and I do really enjoy people watching). I think Robert just has such a better understanding of the game than I do so he knows exactly whats going on. To me, they throw the ball, hit it or miss it, and run around the basses. But ask Robert what's going on and he'll tell you what the coaches are thinking, why the pitcher walked a guy, why the batter hit a fly ball etc. He is really good at explaining things to me, too, so maybe one day I'll figure out what's going on.

Friday's game was pretty exciting and even I spent a lot of time actually watching the game. The Dodgers played the Rockies and had seven runs in the first four innings. They managed to hold the Rockies to six (even though the Dodgers themselves didn't score any more) until the ninth inning. In the ninth inning the Rockies scored one run, so the game went into overtime. We decided we were going to stick it out until the end of the game. And then the game just kept going and going. Well, the Dodgers finally scored a run in the 13th inning and we all got to go home. By that time I secretly didn't care which team scored a run as long as we didn't go into another inning (but of course I was very happy it was the Dodgers). Next game: June 5 vs. the Cubs, Takashi Saito Bobblehead night!
Typical Robert. He's checking the scores from other games on his Blackberry.

I don't know if you can make out the time in this picture, but it says 12:21, A.M. That's what time the game ended after 13 innings. Whew!He he. We probably should have taken a picture of us together before midnight when we still looked awake.

Kevin and Ellen's Wedding

Congratulations Kevin and Ellen! They were married last week in the Denver temple, sealed for time and all eternity. They are such a cute couple and we are so happy for them. This also means we now have all our Wheat sisters since now all the Wheat boys are married. From someone who never had sisters before getting married it is very exciting to now have three! I like this picture. You gotta be tough growing up with the boys.

My Haircut

Yesterday as I was sitting in traffic I saw a hair salon and thought "Hmm, I really do need a haircut." I pulled into the parking lot and went in for a spur of the moment haircut because, hey, it beats sitting in traffic. So I walk in, they take my name, and I have a seat. When they call my name (..or some variance of it, I think it was Melanie this time)I get up and then, dum da dum dum, I see my stylist. It was a guy first of all. I am always more comfortable with women cutting my hair because they actually have to style their own hair everyday. Not only was this a guy, however, he was like a cross between Kramer and someone out of New York Doll. He had the tall, lanky, dark haired, eccentricity of Kramer and the necklaces, rings, and gaunt look of the New York Dollers. My exact thoughts as I approached him were "uhh, this is my stylist?? Okay...."

He was quite hilarious actually, although probably not in ways he thought he was funny. He was really rockin' out to the music in the salon. Between the time he would snip off my hair he would sway forward and back, as if he were playing a guitar. It was definitely my most interesting hair cut ever. In the end though I was happy with my haircut.

Mountain Biking

We tried something a little new this weekend, mountain biking. Steve went last weekend with the first counselor in our bishopric, Levi Heath, and I thought it sounded like fun. So yesterday Steve took Robert and I up to Sullivan Canyon in the Santa Monica Mountains and we randomly ran into Levi when we got there. Thanks to Wendy we were saved a couple miles of uphill biking because she was able to drop us off at the trail head. We still got a good workout with all the uphill we did have to bike up, but it was pretty and it was nice cool weather. At the top of the mountain was an old NIKE missile sight. It used to be a lookout to spot bombs before they hit L.A., so we could shoot off defense missiles. Of course, after the top there was no where else to go but down, down, down the canyon. I did not emerge unscathed as I took an embarrassing little fall and scraped up my leg. But as I told Robert a million times, "I'm okay!" I was a lot more careful after that as you can tell from the video below.

Happy Birthday Robert!

Today Robert enters the later half of his twenties, he is 26! I offered to take him out for dinner, but he said what he really wants is to come home from work at 5:00 for once and sit at home and relax. So our plans for his special day? Do nothing!

Advice to Future L. A. Tourist

The beach is nice, I know. It's fun to walk along the beach and enjoy the breeze and pretty vistas. But for all of you who may be thinking of visiting I offer this one advice: Stay off the bike paths! This has been a pet peeve of ours since we started riding bikes along the bike path. The path is clearly marked as bikes only, yet we are constantly having to dodge people who are strolling down the bike path on foot. This is especially a problem from Venice to Santa Monica beaches where it can get very crowded. We don't want to mow down unsuspecting tourists, but they are on our path! There are usually separate walkways for people without bikes, so when you come out, take note of which path you are on.

If you go down farther south towards LAX the beaches are not so crowded, especially right now. It has been nice to ride bikes down where there are not so many people. There are a lot of people in L.A., but I am starting to see that you can find places that are not so crowded. As further proof I give you the picture below, from a bike path along a canal. It reminds me of the canal up the street from where I grew up where I used to ride my bike when I was younger. Except this one is paved. Sweet, no bumps!
